Light in the Dark. Finding Humor in Stories of Grief
There is an intersection between grief and humor that has always fascinated me. While I love serious works of fiction, I find myself drawn to writers who take me to places that are intense, dark, painful, honest, but are also find the light and lightness in those place, the gorgeous, unexpected dark humor. Writers who explore the dialectical nature of emotion. Painful and funny. Intense and absurd. (Also, we’ll try not to use words like dialectical.) Let’s explore humanity and humor in very real, very sad situations. Life, in other words, and the unique lens through which we tell our stories. For five days we’ll sit together and talk, read and write. We’ll do this as a group and one-on-one. We’ll do so in an effort to help you discover and hone your voice. We’ll explore other writing – short pieces, novels, scripts – that are profound, intimate, funny, surprising. But we’ll spend the majority of our time examining your writing in a supportive, constructive way. It can be a vulnerable, mildly terrifying thing to share. But we’ll do so in a way that finds kindness and joy in the process.
